After years sitting behind the kit Jonathan Hussey is stepping up to the mic with new single On My Own released via SONO Music Group. After years in bands like Fortune Teller,

Siege Hardee and BASSH (who supported Third Eye Blind and played Hang Out Festival

amongst other things), he formed in Benton, a Charlotte based new wave-synth-pop

project in 2019.

He then spent lots of the pandemic crafting vibey dance songs inspired by 80’s artists like

Talking Heads, The Cure & New Order, fitting them with a singer-songwriter storytelling of

his heroes Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty and the more traditional rock band

sensibilities of The Strokes and The War On Drugs.

“I just like synths and drums and I want everyone to hear them and release tracks that

speak to the human experience - to the brain with personal lyrics and to the body with

mesmerising beats and infectious rhythms.” - Jonathan Hussey

The single Own My Own is a perfect example of this - its mood sweeping you up into it’s

retro feel immediately and it’s emotive nature almost a throwback in it’s plain faced

sincerity and the accompanying video only reinforces these themes. The song reflect’s

Benton reflects on the song by saying:

“he song is feeling like you’re on your own in life. Not being present with the people you

love even though they are right there with you. Head in clouds sort of thing”

He works producing a wide range of bands producing out of his Moon-Runner Studios in

his home Charlotte, North Carolina and recently scored Five Foot 280, a documentary short

about female professional drag racer Jasmine Salinas.

With an impressive back catalog of music already available via his website, Benton feels

like Jonathan’s definitive statement and the summation of his musical journey so far.

There’s a dexterity to his diversity that belies someone skilled who has been laying in the

cut just waiting for his moment to shine.“Benton brings an intriguing indie pop scope of influence into the retro pop space with

their gorgeous new single Regret.” - The Wild Is Calling Us.

Benton are set to kick off 2025 with a new EP and follow it up with an album later in the year

supported by a string of live dates…
