Taking their name from Hattie Jacques’ character from Hancock’s Half Hour and combining
fragments and drawing influence from across their own diverse musical lexicon (artists as
seemingly disparate as Tom Waits, FKA Twigs, Aphex Twin, Frank Zappa, Luciano Berio,
Stravinsky, Cardiacs, Lee Scratch Perry, Dead Kennedy’s), Grizelda Pughe has concocted that rarest of things: a new musical entity that feels genuinely original and unique…
“I love music and art that is comprised of fragments and collage, so in the creative process I often like to let chaos reign - I enjoy chance encounters of elements that move me and suggest a musical narrative. The lyrics usually start life separately as short poems or concepts are married to the music as things take shape. On occasion however there might be a lyrical concept that suggests a musical theme and that will be followed in a more linear fashion.”
Grizelda Pughe is a one-man project brought into being by self-styled composer/ producer/multi-instrumentalist and curator of the absurd, Ben Singleton. It came after many years of toiling at the musical and creative grindstone looking for a direction that bridges the gap of the inner world of imagined music with a manifest physical reality. Believing that Grizelda happened to him as much as he created it and describes performing the songs as a possession either by a subconscious voice or some external entity.

Visually, Grizelda Pughe manifests as a Clown - a malevolent creature of the subconscious,
inspired by the Artist Taxi Driver coining the phrase “murder clowns” for the current government.
“It conveys the self-interested and malign indifference a certain group of our society holds towards the rest of us. This extends to a creature lurking in the dark recesses of the collective subconscious a world of repressed harm, desire and fear”
Their first EP Chuck’s Wheel is a terrifying collection of songs that collect monsters, politics and tales from the East is one place (as well as a Jimi Hendrix cover fit for a circus).
You can now tune in every Friday to the GRIZELDA PUGHE SHOW live on their Youtube channel, with ‘celebrity guests’, stand up and general clowning around.
